Meet Me at the Maskanoo
When a colorful, creatively masked crowd gathers along Grace Bay Road on Boxing Day, it can only mean one thing…Maskanoo! This cultural celebration, held annually on the day after Christmas, is a Turks & Caicos tradition blending African culture with an exuberant dose of slave-era costumed pageantry. The event is said to have originated with 18th century slaves who were brought to our islands to work the salt ponds. Today, it’s a showcase of island music, food, arts and entertainment – all kicking off with a spirited street parade along Grace Bay Road, between the Regent Village and Salt Mills Plaza, in Providenciales. Masks optional (but encouraged).
